"The King of Things and the Cranberry Clown" is an illustrated parable of control and acceptance, written in verse, and was a stylistic departure for Callahan. This was his only children's book and its closing lines were included in his funeral program.
For twenty-seven years, John Callahan's cartoons appeared in the pages of Willamette Week. His cartoons exhibited a biting, off-kilter black humor and periodically aroused controversy and public protest. Callahan, who became a quadriplegic at the age of twenty-one and later regained partial use of his upper body, was the subject of Gus Van Sant's biopic "Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot".
