Item: [photograph] Cashup Hotel - Steptoe Butte, Whitman County, Washington
Description: Historic photograph of the Cashup Hotel at Steptoe Butte, circa 1900. It shows the hotel with a running porch roof visible along its front and left side. There is a man sitting on the roof, directly in front of the observatory. A ladder is leaned up against the front porch roof and what looks like some building materials (including a wooden pole) and what appears to be a drainage gutter for roof downspout run-off.
The two-story Cashup Hotel was built in 1888 by the English immigrant James "Cashup" Davis (1815-1896). It was perched atop Steptoe Butte in the Palouse Hills of Whitman County in eastern Washington. After Cashup's death in 1896, the hotel was kept going by his son, but by 1902 its doors were closed and its furnishings emptied out. The structure was destroyed by fire in 1911.
