Eskimo Medicine Man is a record on primitive Alaskan life in the 1930s. It records the experiences in Alaska's remote areas of the last "traveling physician" for the Department of Interior's Indian Service. The book deals with the Eskimos of the Bering Sea, along the coast of the Arctic Ocean, the areas of the Kuskokwim rivershed and of the lower Yukon.

During his Indian Service years, Dr. George kept a diary, filling eight books by recording at night the experiences of the day, noting primarily those things not found in the books he had read. These notes furnish the materials for this volume, documenting the time and the peoples and their ancient way of life.

Dr. John Otto George (1893-1982) was born in Missouri and reared on Oklahoma's Kiowa Indian Reservation. He received his B.A. from Reed College in 1925 and his M.D. from the University of Oregon Medical School in 1930. He practiced medicine for many years in Portland and in winters aided injured skiers at a small clinic at Government Camp.
