Item: [photograph] Leupold Volpel & Co., Portland, Oregon, staff and business front
Description: 8 x 10 inch photograph from the 1930's of the Leupold Volpel & Co. business front with staff (almost 40 persons). Located in NE Portland, Oregon, near Mount Tabor. Likely that the co-owners Leupold and Volpel are seen at the left (wearing the dark coat and dark colored sweater).
Frederick [Friedrich] Leupold (1875-1944) and his brother-in-law Adam J. Volpel (1875-1940) founded their scientific instruments company in 1907. They manufactured and repaired equipment. After the death of Volpel, the business was renamed Leupold & Stevens Instruments. The company is still in existence to today and is located in Beaverton, Oregon.
Around 1910, the company moved to the location seen in the picture, 425 NE 70th Avenue. The factory itself was in a garage-like structure behind the house. Sometime around 1941-1942 they moved to a new location at 4445 NE Glisan St.
Condition: Very Good; Photo shows some light creasing and minor surface wear.
