Description: Inscribed by the author on ffep. Green cloth boards with gilt on spine and front cover. Boards show light spotting and minor soiling; edges of boards and spine ends rubbed. An account, rich in historical detail as well as anecdotes and personal observation, of the experience of Oregon pioneer Laughlin family. The author, Elizabeth Laughlin Lord, tells the story of her family and their migration overland on the Oregon Trail, and their settlement near The Dalles in 1850/1851. She describes their life in Illinois and Missouri prior to their emigration, preparations for the trip, encounters with Indians, early settlers and settlement life in Wasco County. Includes genealogical information for both her father and mother's families.
Inscribed by the author to W. R. Laughlin [Relationship unknown. Possibly William Robert Laughlin (1871-1938) of Yamhill, Oregon. Despite sharing a Laughlin lineage, he doesn't appear to be closely related to her.] Elizabeth (Laughlin) Lord (1841-1913) was an Oregon pioneer and one of Oregon's first proponents of women's suffrage. She was the daughter of Judge William C. Laughlin, an emigrant of 1850. The Laughlins settled on a Donation Land Claim where the city of The Dalles was to be incorporated. And at the time of her death, she had been the oldest resident of The Dalles (a distinction which her mother, Mary Yeargain Laughlin, shared at the time of her death in 1898).
Laid in is a loose plate illustration from a different book showing a man's portrait. His identity is unknown, possibly a relative or another Laughlin.
