Charles W. "King Zany" Dill (1889-1939) had been a silent movie actor and songwriter in Hollywood between 1918 and 1929. In 1917 he was living in Laurel Canyon and working for Universal Studios. Around 1925 he legally changed his name to King Zany. Following an on-set injury he relocated to Pearblossom in the Mojave Desert to recover and supported himself by selling his hand-made books.
