Description: Second printing (December 1894). Publishers green cloth boards with Kipling's ornate pictorials on the front and spine. All edges gilt. Spine cocked. Some wear and minor exposure to tips of corners and spine ends; rear board soiled. One leaf (pp. 113/114) is torn and missing its bottom half [a replacement image has been laid-in]. Spot of soiling in the bottom margin of the frontispiece (the tissue guard is toned) and a few other slight blemishes, otherwise the interior is clean, unmarked. xvi, 395 pp. 18 x 12 cm.
A collection of forty-three tales, forty of which were collected by Flora Annie Steel (1847-1929). She had been the wife of a Chief Magistrate in the Indian Civil Service, and lived in India between 1867 and 1889.
Illustrations by John Lockwood Kipling (1837-1911), Rudyard Kipling's father. 96 pages of detailed notes and analysis by Richard Carnac Temple.
