A history of SDS, the Students for a Democratic Society. The first thorough and definitive history of the organization, the result of more than three years of cross-country research and full access to all of the materials in the SDS archives. It traces the organization from its origins in the civil-rights movement in 1960, through its development as the leading radical organization of its time, to the accidental blowing-up of a townhouse in New York City in March 1970. It portrays the personalities of SDS who did so much to shape the movement: Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, Carl Oglesby, Carl Davidson, Mark Rudd, Bernardine Dohrn, and many others.
Also includes a short epilogue regarding the years 1970-1972, the text of the Constitution of SDS, a list of officers and membership statistics, and a twenty-page addendum describing the roots of SDS between 1905 and 1960. Endnotes. Index.
