Henry Carlile (b. 1934) was born in San Francisco and grew up in the Pacific Northwest. He studied with Theodore Roethke and Elizabeth Bishop at the University of Washington and taught English at Portland State University between 1967 and 2003. During the years 1978-1980 he was a Visiting Lecturer at the Iowa Writers' Workshop.
