William O. Douglas served as a United States Supreme Court Justice between 1939 and 1975. Douglas grew up and attended high school and college in Washington state. In his book, he describes his adventures and his passionate observations and reflections on the mountains and the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest, particularly Oregon and Washington. He also writes about his early life in Washington.
