A scarce copy of this boys' adventure novel set in the Caribbean and on the islands of the Bahamas, involving the tracking and observation of flamingos, on a mission for the local government to locate the breeding place that the birds might be protected from extinction. Authored by an ornithologist and expert in the wild life of south and central America.
George Inness Hartley (1887-1949) was author of scientific works as well as boys' adventure novels about birds. He worked with famed American naturalist and ornithologist William Beebe and assisted him at the zoological station in British Guiana. Together they co-authored ''Tropical Wild Life in British Guiana'' (1917), which featured an introduction by Theodore Roosevelt. His adventure novels were ''Boy Hunters in Demerara'' (1921), ''The Last Parrakeet'' (1923), and ''The Lost Flamingos'' (1924). He was the grandson of the prominent American landscape painter Innes Hartley, and the son of Jonathan Scott Hartley, a notable sculptor.
