The author, Commander Walter Gillespie Winslow (1912-1997), was transferred to the U.S.S. HOUSTON several months prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. Following the sinking of the U.S.S. HOUSTON in the Battle of Sunda Strait, he was captured by the Japanese and spent three-and-a-half years as a POW.
