An early family history and a biographical and career sketch of the Washington state pioneer educator, Virginia Mary (Hancock) Grainger Herrmann (1859-1948), up to about the year 1900. Virginia was the daughter of Daniel Hancock and niece of the Whidbey Island pioneer Samuel Hancock. She began teaching in 1877 and taught at many schools in the area, including Port Discovery, Port Townsend, Whidbey Island, the Coulee Spring/Clover school near Omak, Auburn, Osceola, and Henderson Bay. Provides descriptions of what life and society were like in this area in the 1880s and 1890s.

Based on original interviews with Mrs. Herrmann conducted in the spring of 1943 by the local branch of Delta Kappa Gamma, the national honorary society for women-teachers.

The Virginia Grainger School in Okanogan is named for her. She was also a friend of Dr. Edmund S. Meany, professor of botany and history at the University of Washington, and coached him for his entrance examination to UW.
