[To correct the erroneous note made on the ffep, which is inscribed ''Rose Ford Howe / from Katie / Christmas 1930''. Katie was likely Rose's sister, Catherine Gadsden ''Katie'' Howe. Rose Ford Howe (1897-1987) was born in Seattle, her grandfather was William Bell White Howe, Anglican Bishop of South Carolina, and her mother was a Gadsden. Katie does not appear to have been a first cousin, but was likely a relative and close to the author's family; her brother's name was Drayton Ford Howe.]

Katherine Drayton Simons (1890-1969), who also wrote under the pseudonym Drayton Mayrant, was a South Carolina poet, novelist, playwright, and historian. She was a charter member and later the president of the Poetry Society of South Carolina. She was also the author of several popular novels. In 1997, she was inducted into the South Carolina Academy of Authors.
