A detailed narrative and descriptive travelogue of M. J. Lorraine's 1921 trip down the Columbia River. The journey was made in a dory-rowboat, from the headwaters of the Columbia River in British Columbia, on down the Kootenay River and into the Columbia Gorge to the river's mouth near Astoria.

Madison Johnson Lorraine (1853-1931), a civil engineer from California, at the age of 67 traveled to Canal Flats, B.C. and hand-built his boat, the 17-foot dory ''Columbia''. From there he rowed the full length of the river to Astoria, the first man to make the trip since that of the Canadian explorer David Thompson in 1811.
