Novel by Frederic Homer Baclch (1861-1891) gives a picture of Portland, Oregon and the Pacific Northwest in the 1880s. Written at his home in Hood River and finished in the summer of 1887, he was working on revising his manuscript at the time of his death. The protagonist is Colonna, a half-Italian, half-Indian, and the character of Genevieve is based on the real girl that Balch loved when he lived in Lyle, Washington.
