The author, Clarence Leroy Andrews (1862-1948), lived in the Territory of Alaska off and on between 1897 and 1929 and worked as a customs official during the Klondike Gold Rush. He is reported to have learned Russian in order to read documents and later wrote several books on Alaska and its history.
