Thomas "Tomie" dePaola (1934-2020) was a much lauded American writer and illustrator of children's books. He was educated at the Pratt Institute and at the California College of Arts and Crafts, and pursued a career that spanned more than half a century. In 2011, he received the Children's Literature Legacy Award for his lifetime contribution to American children's literature.
