His mother, Charlotte Isabelle McClintock Garland (1838-1900), after marriage, resided in La Crosse County, Wisconsin. In 1869 the family moved to Hesper (Winneshiek County), Iowa. When Hamlin turned twenty-one in 1881 he departed from his family and they then settled in Ordway, South Dakota.
