Rocket to the Morgue portrays the Southern California science fiction scene of the time, with thinly veiled portrayals of Robert Heinlein ("Austin Carter"), L. Ron Hubbard ("D. Vance Wimpole"), literary agent Julius Schwartz ("M. Halstead Phynn") and rocket scientist/occultist/fan Jack Parsons ("Hugo Chantrelle"), and has minor characters appearing with actual writers' pseudonyms, including those utilized by John W. Campbell and Heinlein, and one with the author's real name, William Anthony Parker White.
