In 2007, Morten Johannes Lauridsen (b. 1943) received the National Medal of Arts, the highest artistic award in the United States, from the President in a White House ceremony '' for his composition of radiant choral works combining musical beauty, power, and spiritual depth.'' He was composer-in-residence of the Los Angeles Master Chorale from 1994 to 2001 and is the Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Composition at the Thornton School of Music (University of Southern California), where he taught for 52 years until his retirement in 2019.
