Labels on paste-downs. 31 illustrations including frontispiece (24 on plates, seven in-text) and a fold-out map. Many pin-hole library stamps scattered throughout (on frontispiece, title page, map, and 11 plates). x, 438 pages. 8.25 x 5.3 inches.

Travel and descriptive account of Central Asia (today Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan) and of the 1873 Russian invasion of the Khanate of Khiva by the Russian army, authored by Januarius Aloysius MacGahan (1844-1878), an American foreign correspondent who worked for the New York Herald and the London Daily News.
