Nicholas Kalashnikoff (1888-1961) tells the true story of his peasant friend Yakub, an artist and storyteller, and also tells the story of a period in his own childhood in a Siberian village. His mother had told him all the joys of ''belonging to a piece of land and of having for companions all the creatures of the barnyard,'' which he comes to discover when they move to the village.
