A tale for young readers about the nomadic Sami (or Lapp) people of Lapland in northern Scandinavia. The author, Miss Neill James, wrote from first-hand knowledge, having spent a year living among the Lapps. She tells the story of Pirak, a young boy. When he was almost ten years old his father brought home a white reindeer fawn, which Pirak named Urpu and who became his pet. The story tells of the many adventures of Pirak and Urpu, and how the white reindeer finally saved the Lapp village from starvation.

The author, Nell Neill James (1895-1994), was born in Granada, Mississippi, and in 1918 graduated from the Mississippi Industrial Institute and College. She traveled the world extensively, spent several years in Japan, and then moved to Mexico. Being known for her popular Petticoat Vagabond travel books, her home became a destination for writers and celebrities such as Ernest Hemingway and Amelia Earhart.
