Men at Their Worst is Dr. Leo Stanley's account of his varied experiences as the Chief Surgeon at California's San Quentin State Prison. At the time this was published, Stanley had reportedly examined and treated about forty-thousand criminals of all kinds. He discusses life at the prison, and describes the inmates, staff, and the evolution of the medical facilities. He also relates his medical philosophy, which includes chapters on his view on sterilization, the importance of glands, the role of the sex life of inmates, and execution by gas chamber.

Leo Leonidas Stanley (1886-1976) was an American surgeon who served as the Chief Surgeon of the San Quentin State Prison from 1913 to 1951.
