The author, Gordon Brook-Shepherd, CBE (1918- 2004), was a British intelligence agent, and following the war, a foreign correspondent and historian. This volume is based on firsthand accounts of many people who were involved, notably including Austrian chancellor Schuschnigg whom he interviewed at great length, the records of the English and German Foreign Offices, the Nuremberg trials, and the postwar Vienna trial of Guido Schmidt.
