Inscribed by Matthew Deady to his brother-in-law: " ''To / Mr John J. Henderson, / with the regards of M.P.D. / Xmas 1890''. There is also a word correction on page 639 which appears to have been written by Deady.
A biographical and character sketch of Matthew Paul Deady (1824-1893), Oregon pioneer judge and politician. Deady served as the President of the Oregon Territory Council (1852-1853) and was appointed by President Franklin Pierce to serve on the Oregon Supreme Court in 1853. In 1859, he was appointed by President James Buchanan to be the judge for the newly created U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon.
