This very popular treatise on roses by horticulturist Samuel Browne Parsons, Sr. (1819-1906) was first published in 1847 under the title ''The Rose: its history, poetry, culture, and classification.'' In 1869, the publisher Orange Judd issued this new and revised edition.
The author, a native of Flushing, New York, started his own nursery business in 1839 and traveled multiple times to Europe to study the horticulture of the Old World. His son, Samuel B. Parsons, Jr., became the head landscape architect of New York City in 1895 and a few later helped found the American Society of Landscape Architects.
