A colorfully written account of Leonard Goodwin and his hunting dog Chic, a pointer [A.K.C.S.B. 29072]. The narrative follows the training of Chic and drolly describes many of their outings in the mountains, hills, canyons, and waters of Southern California, and particularly the San Diego vicinity. Chic often voices her own opinion in discussion with the author. These are entertainingly told sketches of outings in the wilderness, hunting, and making camp with fellow sportsmen. The primary interest is game-birds, but they also take rabbit and rattlesnake, and encounters with deer and a mountain lion are also recorded, not to mention the encounters with local cactus, tarantula, and quicksand.

Leonard Jeremiah Goodwin (1859-1932) was born in Aurora, Illinois and began practicing law in 1870 in Chicago. Between the approximate years of 1887 and 1895 he continued his practice in San Diego and where he was a prominent figure in the Republican Party. He relocated to Chicago and practiced law there until at least 1910. He spent his final years in northern California in the small city of Orland.
