A vividly written and illustrated story of the adventures of a Comanche boy named Little Hawk, set in the early days of the West, who desperately wants to capture a wild horse. A nice volume featuring the earlier work of children's book illustrator Ezra Jack Keats (1916-1983). Keats went on to win the 1963 Caldecott Medal.
The author, Glenn Balch (1902-1989), was the author of several books for young adults about the West, stories of cowboys, Indians, horses and the outdoors. He had a great affection for animals and had a skill for writing about the relationship between humans and animals. He was born in Venus, Texas, but for most of his life called Idaho home.
