The author, Harry Laurens Wells (1854-1940), was a historian and longtime newspaper man. He was born in Geneva, Illinois, and moved to California in 1878. He wrote several local histories and also assisted George Himes in his work on Oregon history. Between 1883 and 1891 Wells served as the editor of West Shore magazine and then moved to Oregon where he worked with Harvey Scott at the Oregonian prior to moving back to California in 1900. He went on to serve as the editor of several newspapers, including the San Jose Mercury, the St. Louis Evening Star and the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, before retiring to Southern California.
