The third volume in the Middle Border series. In this book, Garland tells the story of a pioneering family of the generation preceding his own, a story of hardship, clean living, and a tremendous expenditure of physical energy in the task of conquering the frontier. The main character, Richard Graham, comes from the east as a young man, by way of the Great Lakes, and the story follows him through his experiences, including the logging camps of Wisconsin and working as a pilot on the Wisconsin River, through his courtship and marriage, and his service in the Union Army during the Civil War.
