The author extensively documents her observations of the social and religious customs among the Hindu, Muslim, and Zoroastrian (Parsee) communities encountered, the regional geography, animal life, flora, architecture, history, climate, clothes, recreation, and many other scenes of daily life. These volumes come from the collection of John Wilson (c. 1826-1900), an Irish-born pioneer merchant and book collector of Portland, Oregon. His collection was considered to be one of the finest on the west coast and was bequeathed to the Portland public library in 1900.
