An account of Anne Boleyn and events during the reign of Henry VIII in the years 1527 to 1536. The sources of this history were the correspondence of Henry and his ministers, the correspondence of Charles V, his aunt, sister, and brother, and of his ministers; French correspondence of the same kind; correspondence of the papal agents and of the neutral States; and various diaries, chronicles, memoirs of contemporaries, being accounts compiled by writers from lost sources. In the preface, Friedmann critiques the mistakes made by J. A. Froude and other historians. Includes a 47-page day-specific chronology.
The author, Paul Friedmann (ca. 1837/1840 - ca. 1900), was wealthy German who traveled about Europe conducting research for his works. Although a Lutheran, he was of Jewish descent, and became very concerned about the fate of the Jews in Russia and engaged in a short-lived attempt to establish a Jewish colony in Midian on the Arabian side of the Gulf of Aqaba. He was also the author of Les depeches de Giovanni Michiel, ambassadeur de Venise en Angleterre pendant les annees 1554 a 1557 (1896) and Das Land Madian (1891).
