Description: First Edition. Dark brown cloth stamped in gilt. Owner's label on front pastedown; small abrasion on ffep. Foxing on a couple leaves, else clean and bright. 22 illustrations on plates, including frontispiece and color map. Dust jacket has a faint damp stain on the right edge of the front panel; in an archival mylar sleeve. 299, [2] pages.  

The historical account of three Native American women significant to the pioneer history of the Pacific Northwest: Sacajawea, Madame Marie Dorion, and the Nez Perce Jane Silcott.  

A scarce copy of the first edition in the original dust jacket. The label on the front pastedown reads ''George Gilmore - Boise, Idaho - Publicity.'' Gilmore was a reporter and member of the editorial staff at the Idaho Statesman between 1921 and sometime in the mid-1930s.  

The author, Byron Defenbach (1870-1947) was a Boise newspaper columnist and politician. Prior to coming to Idaho, he was a clerk at the Indian Industrial School in Genoa, Nebraska (1891), superintendent at the Indian school at Fort Belknap, Montana (1892), and was assistant postmaster at Spokane (1897-1903). He moved to Idaho in 1903 and served as the mayor of Sandpoint in 1905. In 1915, he became the state's first certified accountant. He was the State Treasurer from 1927 to 1930 and ran for governor in 1932.
