The story of the men who handled the .50-caliber machine guns on the Fortresses, Liberators, and Marauders that flew out of Britain during World War II, colorfully described in detail and giving account of many dimensions of their wartime lives and experiences. Included in the accounts are those of Ben Kuroki, the only Japanese-American in the US Army Air Force to serve in combat operations, and the Chinese-born gunner Dick Chin (though not mentioned in the book, Chin was shot down in 1944 and made a POW).
The authors, Bud Hutton and Andy Rooney (of 60 Minutes fame), were both soldier-reporters writing for Stars and Stripes. Together they flew on many missions, Hutton as a gunner and Rooney as an observer.
