Most of the poetry is thematic to pioneer life in the Oregon Country/Oregon Territory. The historical pieces include ''Reminiscences of Boyhood,'' ''Practical Conservation'' [forestry and horticulture on Minto's land], and ''The Young Homeskeeper'' [Dr. John McLoughlin and the Hudson's Bay Company].
