Bernard Alfred ''Al'' Schak (1899-1945) grew up near Kalispell and joined the Montana National Guard at the age of 16. As an infantryman, he saw action in France in World War I and participated in five major engagements. Upon his return to the states he spend eight months in Asbury Hospital in Minneapolis.
