A scarce copy of this documentary booklet which shows the devastation in Santa Barbara from the earthquake of the morning of June 29, 1925. The views show many of the city's damaged buildings and blocks as they were immediately following the quake and before the cleaning up had begun. Provides before-and-after comparisons for the Old Mission, the Arlington Hotel, the Californian Hotel, and the San Marcos Building. Also presented are pictures of a few buildings that were not damaged.
This earthquake, which had a magnitude of about 6.5, killed thirteen people and caused tens-of-millions of dollars of damage in 1925 dollars. Throughout 1925 and 1926 downtown Santa Barbara underwent extensive reconstruction.
The photographer, Dwight Dorice Faulding (1888-1937), ran a Santa Barbara photography store that had been founded by his father in 1905. In 1922, he opened the Faulding Hotel, located on the corner of State and Haley Streets, whichl also experienced massive damage from the earthquake.
