A study of route taken by Hannibal in his crossing of the Alps during the Second Punic War. The authors evaluate the work of Polybius, Livy, De Luc, M. Letronne, Folard, St. Simon, D'Anville, Whitaker, Larauza, Napoleon, and others. The second edition includes a few additions and corrections, but is otherwise material the same of the first edition of 1820. The authors made expeditions in 1821 and 1823 to thoroughly examine the route (as discussed in the introduction to the second edition).

John Antony Cramer (1793-1848), Oxford, was principal of New Inn Hall (later merged into Balliol College), 1831-1847, and the Regius Professor of Modern History, 1842-1848. His cousin, Henry Lewis Wickham (1789-1864), was the son of the spymaster William Wickham.
