Autobiographical account of life in a remote Berkshire village, gardening and plant hunting, as well as the author's travels to the Pyrenees, Iceland, the Canary Islands and the Alps. Written in 1938 with the crisis overshadowing the work and the author reconciling himself to the inevitability of war.

Robert Gathorne-Hardy (1902-1973) was a British writer, poet, botanist, and horticulturalist. In 1960 he was made a Fellow of the Linnean Society.
