The Way to Start the Day is a book about how people all over the world have paid their respects to the wonder of each new sunrise, going back to ancient days and in all corners of the world. Byrd expresses people's reverence for the sun and gently suggests to the reader a sharing in this familiar engagement. Her words are complimented by Peter Parnell's colorful, radiantly flowing illustrations.
Byrd Baylor (1924-1921) was an Arizona novelist, essayist, and author of picture books for children. Four of her books were Caldecott Honor winners. Her work often expressed a deep appreciation for the American Southwest and Native American cultures. She collaborated on several books with the illustrator Peter Parnall (b. 1936), three of which were distinguished as Caldecott Honor books. He was raised in the tiny town of Willow Springs in the Mojave desert country of Kern County, California, and is known for his pen-and-ink work.
