A genealogy tracing the descendants of the English puritan emigrant John Whitney (1589-1673), who settled in Watertown, Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1635. He was the son of Thomas Whitney and had been born in Westminster, Middlesex, England. The work covers about eight generations of descendants.

Laid-in is a two-page letter written in 1899 by Justin Whitney (1831-1905) of Boston [see p. 289] to his cousin Mary, presumed to be Mary Emma Putnam of Newton, regarding the family's history. Their grandfather was Joel Whitney (1765-1857) [see p. 155], who was born in the same year as the inventor Eli Whitney, and who is his third-cousin.

Also laid-in, is a 20-page booklet, issued by the De Vinne Press, to promote Henry Melville's book, The Ancestry of John Whitney. It consists of numerous newspaper and periodical reviews, as well as praise by many librarians and Whitney descendants.
