A tale of vice, scheming, murder, suicide and abduction.

Published by J. H. Farrell, one of more significant purveyors of obscene publications in New York City. Farrell was notably hounded by the famous anti-vice activist, Anthony Comstock. In the spring of 1872, he was driven out of town, under threat of arrest, and died a couple weeks later.

A December 1866 classified advertisement in the New York Dispatch listed several of Farrell's offerings which were offered as ''Spicy Reading for the Leisure Hours'' which featured ''richly colored plates.'' A sampling of his publications during the 1860s included titles like Spring Matrass [sic], Mysteries of the Bridal Chamber, Private Looking Glass--or Nature Revealed,The Wedding Night, Secret Habits of the Female Sex, Venus in the Cloister, Advice to Husbands and Wives, and Fanny.

Jeremiah H. Farrell (c. 1832-1872) was born in Ireland and, when he died, left a wife and five young children. He immigrated to the United States sometime before 1856, when his eldest child was born in New York state.
