Piggott's somewhat eccentric work on the causes and alleviation of disease, which also includes elements of his salutary personal philosophy, as well as some original poetry. He states that his suggestions, if adhered to, will result in ''a long life, free from aches, pains and diseases.'' He addresses various parts of the body, many different diseases and ailments, diet, issues like suicide, parental child murder, mental hygiene, Christian charity, marriage, Indian Schools, and work. He is critical, though not necessarily condemnatory, of what he calls ''credists'' (including Seventh-Day Adventists and followers of Christian Science) and the ''Breakfast Food'' fad. Charles Henry Piggott (1850-1924) is probably best known for the folly castle he built in southwest Portland, alternatively known as Piggott's Castle, Gleall Castle, or the Charles Piggott House. The Oregon historian Fred Lockley described Piggott in 1914 as ''a lawyer, a poet, a civil engineer, a philosopher, a bricklayer, a dreamer, a speculator, an author, a wood dealer, a hater of shams, a builder of air castles and of real castles, a thinker, and an odd genius.''

The inscription reads: ''To E M Wiese / with the compliments / of the author. / Sept 20 [year?] / ''Hic labor hoc / opus est'' / C H Piggott''.
