The story of Rev. ''Uncle'' Joab Powell (1799-1873), a Baptist preacher and Oregon pioneer of 1852, considered to be a successor to Jason Lee. Primarily covers his years in Oregon, describing his personality and his work with the state's early Baptists, providing historical context for these early missionary efforts. In Oregon, he settled near Lebanon/Scio in the Santiam country of Linn County. In 1854, his congregation built the Providence Pioneer Church, located near Lacomb, where in 1924 a memorial to Powell was erected. The book also briefly addresses his early years and his calling to the Oregon Territory, as well as his influence and legacy, recording several tributes to him.
Includes bibliographic references and appendix notes on Joab Powell's children.
The author, M. Leona Nichols (1880-1951), was a prominent Oregon club woman, author and historian. She helped organize the University of Portland library and was known for her historical writings.
