The White Dove Review was founded in 1959 by Ron Padgett, who while working at a Lewis Meyer's bookstore in Tulsa had been inspired by avant-garde little magazines like The Evergreen Review, LeRoi Jones' Yugen, and Wallace Berman's Semina. Padgett and his high school classmate and now co-editor, Richard Gallup, solicited work from a number of Beat and Black Mountain poets who they were enthusiastic about and received several responses.
The inaugural issue features Jack Kerouac's poem ''The Trashing Doves,'' a nod to the incipient Review.
