Title: The Negro Family in the United States
Author: E. Franklin Frazier / [Preface by Ernest W. Burgess]
Description: Revised and abridged edition, 1948. Boards in burgundy cloth with silver lettering on spine. Minor blemishes to covers. Interior is clean and crisp, no markings. xviii + 374.
An attractive, early revised and abridged edition of Frazier's groundbreaking monograph, an influential classic text in Black family studies. First published in 1939, it addresses the question of who, culturally, the African became in America, and the social evolution the Black family as shaped by economic institutions (e.g., slavery), social relations (e.g., race relations), and social stratification (e.g., racial inequality).
Regarding the abridgment, the author states that ''there has been no change in the organization of the materials of the book which presents a natural history of the Negro family. The appendices which contained family histories, supplementary statistical tables, and a comprehensive bibliography have been omitted from the present edition... Although numerous footnotes have been eliminated, the important descriptive materials in many of them have been woven into the text...
''Figures from the 1940 federal census have been added to or substituted for the 1930 census figures... Both case materials and statistical data as far as they were available have been utilized to show the changes which have occurred in the Negro family as the result of the increasing mobility of the Negro population, involving for the first time a significant westward movement , and other changes in the Negro population as the result of World War II.''
