1918 Young Woman/Girl's Graduation Scrapbook ~ Alliance High School, Nebraska ~ ephemera ~ Beulah R. Reddish Grove ~ Frank M. Knight

A young woman's high school scrapbook, put together in 1918-1920, with many items pertaining to Alliance High School in Alliance, Box Butte County, Nebraska. The scrapbook was created by Beulah R. Reddish (1897-1945), who graduated in May 1918. Some pages are blank, but many are filled out or have items pasted in. There are also many loose items in between the pages, including several photographs, most not identified, but including some of Beulah in school uniform, in costume, and feeding her cat a pancake). There are some photographs of a military nature, likely of her future husband.

The scrapbook opens with a congratulatory note on Alliance National Bank letterhead written by F. M Knight (the scrapbook was a graduation gift from him), followed by portraits and blurbs (cut out from the yearbook) of the faculty and the students in the graduating class of 1918. She also writes down the names of the nine AHS boys who went to serve in World War I (including her future husband, Phillip T. Grove). There is also a handwritten letter from her spouse's grandfather, Theodore Grove, who sends his regrets that he will not be able to leave Chicago to attend their wedding in 1920, a pass card with her attached photograph giving her permission to enter the WWI Army training facility at Camp Cody in New Mexico, Buelah's calling card, several school and commencement programs, the school newspaper "The Shining Shun" published to commemorate the graduating Class of 1918, and lists of her graduation and wedding gifts noting from whom they were received.

The man who gifted the scrapbook to Beulah, Frank M. Knight (1856-1940), had been a prominent figure in the civic life of Alliance since 1889. He was the founder of the Bank of Alliance (and the Bank of Nonpareil before that). The Knight Museum is named in his honor.
