A copy which belonged to the distinguished historian, author and Hispanic history specialist, Irving A. Leonard (1896-1996). His name and ''Berkeley Jan 5, 1934'' inscribed on the half-title. Leonard earned his Ph.D. at the University of California in 1928, and was retained at the school until 1937 as instructor and assistant professor. He continued his professorship at Brown University 1940-1942, and then at the University of Michigan until his retirement in 1965. He was the author of many papers published in the American Historical Review and the Hispanic American Historical Review, and among his better known books were Books of the Brave (1949) and Baroque Times in Old Mexico (1959). In 1960, he served as chair of the Conference on Latin American History, the professional organization of Latin American historians.
